Tulus sings almost every moment of our lives. The soundtrack for this letter is:
“Coba sehari saja, kau jadi diriku
Kau akan mengerti bagaimana kumelihatmu
Mengagumimu, menyayangimu”
I always want to see you as one thing. Someone who adds up every good thing that I’ve already possessed. For I always believe I am already complete. With or without anything that comes into and leaves my life.
I was happy, yet I am happier. I could solve my own problems with the best options I had, but better alternatives just pop up when I break them down with you. I could pass all the obstacles in the past, but suddenly they look smaller and less significant under your sight. To sum up, tomorrow just stop being frightening and even start to excite me when it’s with you!
However, we humans are complex beings that one line will never be sufficient to depict us. And among many ways to delineate you, I choose these four components: your verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns.
Your Verbs
Tolerate: We were just friends when you taught me about Hanlon’s Razor. “Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.” From that moment, I know that not only you are someone to look up to in understanding people’s bad deeds, but also you are someone with whom long conversations will never be tiring.
Adapt: It’s fascinating to see you keep a cool head in the hardest situation, like the first time you texted me on Telegram because your phone was broken. For your information, that ability of yours makes me think superheroes’ powers are superficial. We overestimate their thunder, web, and speed. We overlook one thing: resilience–superpower that makes human kind exists until today.
Forget-Remember: Do I need to explain? Maybe one of the reasons you forgive people is because the memories of their awful actions just evaporate easily from your mind. It’s also concluded by the same jokes you throw, the same stories you tell, or just the forgotten count on your pinches payable (the last you do on purpose). But guess what, your temporal lobe often surprises me by its ability to remember every embarrassing thing related to me. Huh!
Pamper: Vaya! (Spanish word for “Wow!”) Thank you for your effort. I think pampering is not your innate behavior, but you have been doing such an awesome job in adjusting to my cheesy side.
Tease: THIS ONE! This one is the innate behavior! You put in abundant effort to make me pout. You even watched a movie on double speed to find a single fact that would make me mad. In this case I am the one who have to adjust. Because there’s no free lunch is currently translated by my mind into “If you want to be pampered, be ready to be teased!”
Sleep: Ah, yeah. I previously mentioned that long conversations will never be tiring, right? In fact you are the one who will be exhausted and say good night. I had a little doubt about it back then. I mean, “Who needs that much sleep?” Well, you do. You, my admirable Koala.
Your Adjectives
Cute: Sometimes it comes from those shiny chubby cheeks, sometimes from the tender eyes. After all, you are undeniably charming (playing Can’t Take My Eyes Off You) especially when you smile after we talk about a future-related thing together.
Patient: I was at a meeting. I was at a class. I was going shopping. It could take 3 hours. You only said, “Okay”? After that I called you back and we talked as usual. There’s no glimpse of sulk, there’s no complaining. You smiled as bright as ever. The room was filled with our voices. And my heart found another reason to keep loving the same person.
Curious: You ask a lot of questions. You want to know my views on things. Though we sometimes end up looking back, realizing how far we had deviated from the first topic, and laughing at how crazy it is, it’s indeed very fulfilling to know that an orca is a dolphin, not a whale. There’s no more fear about working on different areas or having disparate terminologies since I know we will stay curious about each other’s world.
Mischievous: “Beautiful, smart, and sometimes funny” hopefully will be an eternal explanation you have on me. But as this writing gets published, I have to brace myself because they will come in the form of nouns “beauty, intelligence, and occasional fun” or verbs or adverbs as well. Anyway, as long as you keep smirking before executing your mischievous plans, all will always be predicted. HAHAH!
Intelligent: It was the first semester of Land and Building Tax class. We were asked to count the tax for a single 30,000 kilometers length pipe and you chuckled, wondering how it could be when the diameter of the earth is only about 13 thousands kilometers. But for the record, I also have bad memories of you bragging about your sophisticated neurons.
Your Adverbs
Rationally: Your rational thinking helps me eliminate dramas. We could focus on finding the root of the problems and alternatives that are available. You also don’t fall on authority bias or ad hominem. As your lover, I appreciate your checking on the validity of every information I uttered instead of taking it instantly.
Sincerely: People who don’t know you will assume you are heartless because among 7 thousands languages, you choose to speak facts. You’re just a kind-hearted person who’s trapped in this prudish world. But who needs help from someone who doesn’t demand payback like you? That’s not how our world works.
Randomly: Talking about your hometown will end up discussing the hypocrisy of some politicians. A conversation about my Spanish class will turn into figuring out how crocodiles breathe. You definitely bring disorder to my order. Yet it is what makes me feel human.
Slowly: You are the brake of my accelerator. With you taking a rest doesn’t feel wrong at all. Since the first time I met you, you showed me there’s no need to rush. Look at the stars! No, it’s not the time to sing Coldplay though we don’t need to rush. Just look at the universe! It’s never been in hurry but it always achieves its goals: the sun rises and sets, the rain falls, and the snow melts. (I don’t say that now I completely agree with you but now I take things more easily than before. Peace.)
Your Nouns
Paradox: You are trustworthy yet unbelievable. Your silence speaks loudly and your liberation attracts me. You are an extremely long book that I will never finish. But I am happy to enjoy every page of yours, for the rest of my life.
Defecation: Your digestive system is the best in the world. You defecate twice a day! Sometimes I feel I’m not important enough not because you have a boys night out or you play games all day long, but it’s because you take half an hour every time you enter your favorite room.
War and Peace: Leo Tolstoy would be stressed because of you. I will leave this statement open to dispute. I know you like it.
That’s it. I know it’s only about time you will change. See you on revision then!
